British Airways and Virgin became the first carriers to monitor passengers at check-in and turn them away if they appeared to have flu. Airline and cruise companies said they were refusing to allow passengers on board who showed signs of the illness. And there was confusion over whether or not travel insurance would be valid to cover medical treatment or a cancelled holiday.
