FDA proposes to regulate electronic cigarettes under less-strict tobacco rules

The Food and Drug Administration said Monday it plans to regulate smokeless electronic cigarettes as tobacco products and won’t try to regulate them under stricter rules for drug-delivery devices. The federal agency said in a letter to stakeholders Monday that it intends to propose rule changes to treat e-cigarettes the same traditional cigarettes and other tobacco products. The news is considered a victory for makers and distributors of the devices, which continue to gain popularity worldwide. E-cigarettes are plastic and metal devices that heat a liquid nicotine solution in a disposable cartridge, creating vapor that the “smoker” inhales. A tiny light on the tip even glows like a real cigarette. Users and distributors say e-cigarettes address both the nicotine addiction and the behavioral aspects of smoking — the holding of the cigarette, the puffing, seeing the smoke come out and the hand motion — without the more than 4,000 chemicals found in cigarettes. First marketed overseas in 2002, e-cigarettes didn’t become easily available in the U.S. until late 2006. Now, the industry has grown from the thousands of users in 2006 to several million worldwide, with tens of thousands new e-smokers every week.

Genetically modified salmon

Genetically modified salmon is deemed safe for human consumption – despite higher levels of a suspected carcinogen.

With fish stocks around the world depleted by overfishing and disrupted by climate change, farm-raised salmon stands as a viable if not entirely appetising alternative.

Last Friday, though, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took a potentially dangerous step. The agency ruled that salmon whose genes have been altered so that they grow more rapidly than their wild counterparts are safe for human consumption. In so doing, the FDA opened the door for salmon to become just another unhealthful cog in the industrial-food machine. And it may have foisted upon the public yet another cancer risk.

Zenpep

Fonte: aqui.

Sometimes the pancreas of some people does not create sufficient levels of digestive enzymes, thus making the act of digesting food difficult. The name for this rare condition is exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and is commonly associated with cystic fibrosis. Zenpep is the name of the product that will make it easier for a person to digest food, and is the only treatment available for the condition.

FDA: alerta

Fonte: aqui.

Consumers should stop using Zicam Cold Remedy nasal gel and related products because they can permanently damage the sense of smell, federal health regulators said Tuesday. The over-the-counter products contain zinc, an ingredient scientists say may damage nerves in the nose needed for smell. The other products affected by the Food and Drug Administration's announcement are adult and kid-size Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs. The FDA says about 130 consumers have reported a loss of smell after using Matrixx Initiatives' Zicam products since 1999.

Ligações perigosas

Fonte: aqui.

  • FDA Issues New Rules For Advisory Committees.
  • The changes involve conflicts of interest and waivers for panel members; advisory committee voting procedures; the timing of committee briefing materials to be released and the procedures for deciding when an advisory committee meeting should be held.
  • The FDA has long argued finding experts without financial conflicts is arduous, if not impossible, because many top-flight physicians and academics serve as industry consultants.
  • To answer the criticism, the FDA has these new rules: For starters, if an individual, his or her spouse, or minor child has potentially conflicting financial interests totaling more than $50,000, he or she would not be allowed to participate in that meeting.

Fonte: aqui.

The chip maker said it received FDA clearance for Intel Health Guide, a set of technologies that includes a special-purpose touchscreen computer. The system is to be attached to medical devices, including blood-pressure monitors, glucose meters and weight scales, to gather data that is sent over the Internet to medical professionals.

The goal is to help medical and insurance companies save money by shifting more health-care chores associated with an aging population to homes and out of hospitals.

Intel has conducted pilot tests of the system and will start broader testing in the third quarter, with availability in the U.S. and the U.K. expected late this year or early in 2009. Pricing has not been set.

Regranex

Preocupante, isto:

Inaladores

Traditional inhalers using Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) to propel inhaled drugs into the lungs will no longer be made or sold in the U.S. by the year ending December 31, 2008, because of rising concerns over Earth’s depleting ozone layer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also issued an advisory on Friday urging people to switch to newer alternatives seeking adequate doctoral support.

Falsos dispositivos médicos no mercado
